Jokkmokk Winter Market 2022

Day Trip to the Jokkmokk Winter Market (2-6 feb 2022)

For over 400 years the annual Jokkmokk winter market has been a major event in the Arctic region. Jokkmokk is a central town for the Sami people and they come from across Sapmi in the first week of February each year to meet, trade and celebrate their culture.

Join us on a 2-hour small group (max 8 people) minibus tour from Luleå to Jokkmokk on any of the three market days. Our Swedish guide will give you many great insights into the region and tell stories along the way about the forest, rivers, and mountains of the region.

At the market, you will be able to immerse yourself in Sami Culture. Here you will find an incredible range of Sami Duodji, traditional dancing, reindeer racing, lectures, and some amazing local food. Duodji is the handicraft and the art made by the Sami artists, based on Sami traditions, Sami form thinking, Sami patterns, and colors. Much of the village of Jokkmokk is closed to traffic for the market and there is a wide range of streets with stalls, shops, and events to explore. We will also have time to visit Ajtté - the Swedish Sami and Mountain museum where one can spend many hours exploring the exhibits, lectures, and films.
The price for the tour which starts at 0800 and finishes at 1700 is sek 3225 per person.

Arrival to Luleå
Luleå is an amazing winter city around which the frozen Luleå river wraps itself and provides the local people a winter playground in the ice and snow. Come and join us for a 5-day stay during which you will enjoy a fantastic variety of winter experiences and a day at the Jokkmokk market. All from the comfort of your hotel in Luleå.

As fly into Luleå, you may catch a glimpse of the Luleå river as it winds its way from the mountains near Norway, past Jokkmokk and Luleå and flows out into the shallow seas around the 1200 plus islands of the Luleå archipelago. We will meet you at the airport for the short transfer to your hotel in Luleå.

On the way, we will cross the Luleå river and get a great view of the ice track that winds its way around the city on the frozen river. This ice track will be a place for us to explore later on in your stay. We may also see in port some of the ships of the Swedish Icebreaker fleet if they are not all out keeping the shipping lanes in the frozen Baltic sea open.

We will of course introduce you to the staff at your hotel and after check-in, you will have time to relax before heading out to dinner at one of the fantastic restaurants in the local area. We will give you restaurant recommendations and even make a table booking for you if you would like.

We have left this day free for you to explore Luleå at your leisure. You might take a walk on the ice trail that winds its way for several kilometers around the town. We recommend using one of the free kick sleds to propel yourself around the trail. The more adventurous can even hire some long distance ice skates or skis. You can find some photos of people enjoying the ice trail below. We can of course also arrange one of our other great local winter activities such as snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skating or even ice-fishing.

Dogsledding is probably the most popular activity for our guests to Swedish Lapland and we have of course planned one for you. The dog sledding kennel is a short 20-minute drive from Luleå and a local family and some of their 60 Huskies will take you on a fantastic 2-hour drive your on sled adventure. You will be 2 people per sled and take turns driving and sitting through our magical snow-covered forest and over frozen lakes.

In the afternoon, we recommend a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Church Village Gammelstad. Church villages in Sweden date back many hundreds of years. They were established when local parishioners needed to build a small cottage for overnight stays near the regional church when they visited for services or church events. Over the years the number of cottages grew and Luleå has over 240 which are still owned by local parishioners. While there were originally 71 church villages, Gammalstad is the best-preserved of the 16 remaining church towns in Sweden. There is a visitor center here and you will enjoy a walk around the village taking in the history all around you. We can also arrange a lcoal guide to show you around if you so wish.
